Cherokee Bits and Pieces

Sequoyah

Creator of the Cherokee Alphabet.
He was the only man in history known
to have single-handedly created a
written language. He was the son of
a Cherokee mother and an
English father.
By the 1820's hundreds of Cherokees
had learned the language and in
1824 portions of the bible
appeared in the Cherokee language.

Booger Masks

Worn by Cherokees to ward off evil
Europeans' influence and diseases.
The mask on the right represents the
black slave of a white man.
The Buffalo mask on the left,
symbolized the Indians as hunters.

Turkey-feather Cloak

Made by Cherokee craftsmen in 1950,
reproduces a style that dates back to precontact
times. Most likely worn by village headman for
important ceremonies.
